The History of Mariachi

I developed a deep love of mariachi as a small child. As I grew to adulthood, I found myself fascinated by everything about it: the music, the costumes, the instruments, and the history of where it came from. I've conducted long hours of qualitative research on my own and through focus groups.
On this page I will periodically discuss the history of mariachi music. First, we'll look at the meaning of the word "mariaichi" and how the artform developed in Mexico.
I hope this information helps you to understand the deep significance mariachi music has in Hispanic culture. I am excited to share my love of this wonderful artform with you.

The Meaning of the Word
The meaning of the word mariachi comes from two sources: a French word meaning "wedding" and from the construction of dance floors. The dance platform used by ballet folklorico dancers was crafted of wood. "Mariachi" was the wood used to form the floor.
How Mariachi Spread

The Spanish conquest of the Americas had a huge influence on the natives of Mexico. As many Catholic priests and friars traveled abroad to convert the natives to Christianity, music was used as a form of communication.
During this period of upheaval, the Spanish introduced guitar, brass, and woodwinds to Mexico, along with the violin. These instruments were combined with indigenous instrumentation (drums, conk shells, and rattles) to create the beginning of mariachi music.
